I Need a Mental Health Day

April 4, 2017 / Cindy Barclay / "Treasure Trove" Blog Roll

“…excel still more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet (restful) life…” ~ Thessalonians 4:11

Tummy ache, fever and a call from Sarah, Cohen’s mom and the school nurse propelled me to grab my keys to pick up our grandson, in the middle of the school day.

He was pale with dark circles under his eyes and looked exhausted- definitely not Cohen’s usual look.  He stood up and gave me a hug. “Nana, I’m so glad you’re sit at home waiting until I need you. I don’t feel good.”  😉

Prayers, juice, toast, stories and cuddles and he still wasn’t feeling better.  🙁

The next morning, Sarah called to make sure it was ok for Cohen to stay with me instead of going to school.

“Of course! What do you think is going on? I’m worried – the sick and tired just keeps coming.”

“Me, too Mom. The Dr. isn’t sure what’s going on. His throat is raw but his strep test came back negative, his stomach hurts a lot and he’s tired all the time. I wish we could get to the bottom of it.”  (a test finally came back positive for mono but at the time it was still a mystery)

Cohen slept for a couple of hours and then we read, played a few quiet games, watched a movie and snuggled. He seemed to be feeling better by the time Sarah came to pick him up.

“How’s he doing, Mom?”

“I think better. No fever and he was eating a little more today. No real complaints.”

“A day at Nana’s. That will fix you up. Maybe he just needed a mental health day.”

I laughed and we both agreed- when you’re overwhelmed and not feeling great –  give yourself permission to take a mental health day once in a while- just to recover from LIFE coming atcha fast!

As Cohen was getting his coat on, he wrapped his arms tight around me and smiled.

“Hey, Nana!  Thanks for the middle health day!”

Ahhh- little pitchers have big ears.

“You are so welcome! But I think you mean mental health day.”

“No! no, Nana. Not mental! I meant middle health day. You know!  Those days where it’s not too high-   it’s not too low-  it’s just perfect in the middle.”

I do know what he means!

I love God’s Middle Health Days.  Not to high- not too low- not too much- just perfect in the middle. He always knows how to calm my heart and bring me back to the middle.  🙂

Such a great post… Rest is one of God’s gifts that too often remains unwrapped… In my opinion, more these days than ever before.

No kidding! When we were growing up (that makes us sound ancient, doesn’t it?) there was a lot of dream, rest, “wonder”, and awe times. Life was truly “slower” but more enjoyable? I had no idea what a “mental health day” was- but I do now!

Amen. I think every sane adult needs a mental health day. 😀

Agreed- I’m finding I have to carve out “mental health” time every day. 😉

Hi, I’m Cindy- 35 years of “livin” with my prince charming, Jeff. I’m a home maker, not a house wife, parent of 7, memory maker, mama bear, Nana to 11 & counting, Pastor’s wife and I’m daily amazed by the depths of God’s love.

I love reading, home schooling, encouraging others, playing the piano, worshiping, dating my husband, and planning parties and retreats for our clan. Someday, I really want a horse and learn to play the cello and viola.
